Welcome, Readers, to the third book in the Angelic Hosts series, Sophie’s Wish. The action continues as the prophesy unfolds.
An Act of Kindness Sets an Ancient Prophesy in Motion..
Five years have passed since the archangel Camael left a newborn baby on the doorstep of Charles and Nanette Fairchild. A child of destiny, Sophie amazes her parents and collects strays, all while lovingly watched over by her two invisible, winged guardians, Uncle Cam and Uncle Gabriel. Now, she has befriended another stray, a homeless girl who is a victim of multiple tragedies, far too many for one so young. By bringing the girl home, Sophie’s act of kindness heralds the unfolding of an ancient prophesy, one that ensures the downfall of the Dark Ones should it be allowed to play out. Desperate, the Fallen rise determined to prevent the prophesy from being fulfilled by killing the messenger…the child of destiny herself! Can Sophie’s angelic uncles save her before it’s too late?
“And she spread her gossamer wings, fluttering like a butterfly, and flew high, high, high in the sky where all the angels live watching over us, even the tiniest one of all. The end.” Nanette closed the book. Smiling, she glanced down at Sophie to see if she was asleep. Her smile was greeted by big, brown eyes…still wide open.
Sophie grinned. The Tiniest Angel was her favorite book, and not a bedtime went by when she didn’t ask for her mother or father to read it to her. “Are there really tiny angels, mama?”
Nanette laughed. “I like to think so.”
Sophie sighed, thoughtful. “But how do you know?”
Her mother leaned down, tucking the covers around her shoulders just as she liked them, snug as a bug in a rug, and said, “Because, ma petite, you are my very own tiniest angel.” She kissed Sophie’s cheek. “Now, you must go to sleep. Tomorrow is your last day of kindergarten, and then you have two whole weeks off from school for the holidays.”
Giggling, Sophie wished her mother a very good night. “I love you, mama.”
Nanette stood and walked to the door, making sure she left it open two full inches so the light from the hallway could be seen, and whispered, “I love you, too, Sophie, with all my heart.”
As soon as her mother’s footsteps could no longer be heard, Sophie rolled over and looked at the chair in the corner of her room.
“And is she right, Uncle Gabe?”
Gabriel sat forward, a smile on his face, and a twinkle in his lavender eyes, and said, “I believe she is, Sophie. You are most definitely the tiniest angel I’ve ever seen. And she’s also right that you need to close those big brown eyes and go to sleep.”
“But Uncle Cam isn’t here to tell me goodnight too.”
“He had an errand to run. That’s why you have me tonight. I hope you’re not disappointed?” Gabe gave her a mock-serious face, one she’d become quite accustomed to seeing.
“You’re silly, Uncle Gabe. Of course, I’m not disappointed.”
“Oh, good!” He blew out a breath of air sending his hair flying from his forehead. “For a minute there, I thought I might have to go jump off a building or something in despair.”
“Don’t do that!” She became alarmed.
“Why ever not?” The mock-serious face was back in place.
Sophie sat up. “Because you’d get hurt!”
Seeing the real fear in her eyes tugged at his heart, and Gabe rushed over wrapping his arms around the tiny girl. He leaned down and kissed her sable curls. “I promise you I won’t let myself get hurt.” He smiled over her head.
“Pinky swear!” she said, holding out her small hand, pinky first.
Gabe hooked his own around hers and said, “I pinky swear not to jump off any buildings and get hurt.”
The task complete, and the promise made, Sophie relaxed. “Good.”
“Now, will you go to sleep so I can be at ease that all is right in your world? Your uncle Cam will be very unhappy with me if I fail to make sure of that.” He tucked her back in, snug as a bug in a rug.
“Okay, but you have to do it.”
He stood up, hands on hips, acting like he had no idea what she wanted. “Do what, little one?”
“Come on, Uncle Gabe! You know!”
“I’m not sure…” He raised one dark eyebrow.
“Please!”
He could never resist her, not even if his life depended on it.
“Okay, but only because you said please.”
He walked to the center of the pink and white bedroom, bowed once in an old-world, courtly manner, then stood, shoulders back. Then the archangel, Gabriel, spread his massive wings. They reached from one wall of her bedroom to the other filling the space. Arms out, he declared, “Ta da!”
Sophie clapped her hands, applauding as she always did when he presented his wings to her. “Yay!”
Gabe chuckled, then flexed making them flap once. The wind ruffled her bangs.
“Okay, now you must close your eyes, and then I have to go.”
“But you’ll come back, right?”
Gabriel’s usually sardonic good looks transformed into the easy smile of a man who was wrapped around the finger of a five-year-old, his niece, Sophie.
“I always do. You know I couldn’t stay away if I tried. I’m ever your servant, ma’am.” He bowed once again.
“I love you, Uncle Gabe.” Big, brown eyes drooped to half-mast.
“I love you, too, Sophie. Now…off to the land of sweet dreams.” Gabe let his voice drop to a deep, melodious rhythm that helped her sleepy eyes close the rest of the way. In mere seconds, she was well on her way to sleep. The darkness in the room was illuminated as a large gray tabby slipped through the crack in the doorway causing it to open wide. Gabriel brushed his wing against the door, so it was once again cracked open only two inches.
“Up you go, Toulouse.”
The cat jumped onto the bed and curled up by the girl’s feet. His loud purring filled the room as he eyed the angel, his tail swishing back and forth.
“There’s a good boy. Keep watch on our girl now.”
Staying only one minute longer to enjoy the peacefulness of the innocent, sleeping child, he flapped his wings as he ascended up, up, and through the ceiling back out into the night.
