A sight for sore eyes…
Beau stewed all night following a heated row with his mother. He was angry she’d gone behind his back to hire help. He didn’t need help! No one knew his house better than he did, and if he needed anything outside of the house, he could call for a ride or delivery or whatever. The last thing he wanted or needed was some strange girl around all day. At least had she been a woman, he might’ve felt differently, but the tiny bundle he’d had in his arms yesterday weighed next to nothing. Probably some high school kid his mother picked up like a stray. Still, she’d smelled nice. It was the only thing he could pick up on besides the softness of her voice.
Edna had argued with him, point for point. Said she and his dad needed assistance since they were helping him around the clock. That was a low blow. He knew his blindness was a burden on them. Hearing her say it out loud only fueled his own bitterness. He loved his parents. That’s why he’d purchased such a big house, so they could move into it with him, keep an eye on it while he was away, and in general, live a better, easier life. They no longer had a house payment, nor all the problems that came with house ownership. They were in their twilight years, and he wanted them to be able to spend their money on trips and fun, not a mortgage and utility bills. He could afford all of it and then some with his skyrocketing career with the Canuck’s, but if his sight never returned, he’d lose it all.
That’s why he’d finally agreed to let this girl, Cara, come and help him out. She could drive him to appointments, and maybe fix a few meals. The only condition he’d insisted on was that he would be the one to pay her salary, not his parents. Edna had grudgingly agreed after Ed told her to take the compromise. His dad knew how stubborn he could be. He inherited that trait directly from him.
And now, the girl was expected to arrive soon.
